The chart above depicts the percent of contributions in U.S. Dollars donated to Republican and Democrat candidates/parties/affiliated groups, seeking national office during the 2020 election cycle, donated by employees, or owners, of the companies listed, and those individuals' immediate family members, based on data collected from www.opensecrets.org.
In some instances the money was possibly donated by the actual company, but the bulk of it typically comes from individuals within the company, or immediate family members of individuals within the company. The only way I'm discussing the actual organization is if I reference it as "the organization itself", otherwise, I'm talking about the jargon mentioned above (individuals within the company, owners, employees, direct family, etc.). In some instances, the money considered contributed may come from PACs affiliated with the mentioned organization.
Facts:
The top 5 textbook publishers, according to (ugh) google, are:
1) Pearson
2) Scholastic
3) McGraw-Hill
4) Cengage Learning
5) Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
- None of the companies listed appear to have made any direct political donations in 2020, which would be considered from "the organization itself", as referenced above. All donations, therefore, fall into the other mentioned categories.
- McGraw-Hill is likely misleading (so I left it off the chart), because it fits under the umbrella of Apollo Global Management, which has a ton of subsidiaries, including Coinstar, Redbox, Cox Media Group, McGraw-Hill, etc., which you can google and find more, but the point is that the number provided are likely not a good account of what those at McGraw-Hill donated by themselves. One important barometer to consider with Apollo Global Management is that the total collection of their subsidiaries donated approximately ~94k to Joe Biden in 2020, while only donating ~$26k to Donald Trump
Finally, Democrats on the Left, Republicans on the Right!
Pearson $457,223 $23,812
Scholastic $103,411 $1,598
Cengage Learning $105,783 $12,238
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt $118,192 $3,198
Totals $784,609 $40,846
Information on Apollo Global Management (again, likely misleading in terms of those that work at the book company):
McGraw Hill $1,008,177 $1,684,127
