The chart above depicts the percent of contributions in U.S. Dollars donated to Republican and Democrat candidates/parties/affiliated groups, seeking national office during the 2020 election cycle, donated by employees, or owners, of the companies listed, and those individuals' immediate family members, based on data collected from www.opensecrets.org.
In some instances the money was possibly donated by the actual company, but the bulk of it typically comes from individuals within the company, or immediate family members of individuals within the company. The only way I'm discussing the actual organization is if I reference it as "the organization itself", otherwise, I'm talking about the jargon mentioned above (individuals within the company, owners, employees, direct family, etc.). In some instances, the money considered contributed may come from PACs affiliated with the mentioned organization.
Thoughts and other info:
- InterContinental seems like the obvious choice, but I'm going to tell you why I'm going with Best Western instead. The Republican Party isn't perfect, and ~$82k of the money donated by IC went to the Republican National Committee. As far as donations went, Joe Biden outdid Trump nearly 2-1 (~$19k-~$11k).
- When it comes to the ~$35k in total donations out of those affiliated with Best Western, more than a quarter of that went to Donald Trump's 2020 Presidential Campaign, and they donated nearly three times the number to Trump compared to Biden. That's a big W in my book because a lot of these companies hedge their bets and dump money into various party-based funding sources for Congress or the national committee. Looking at the nuts and bolts of Best Western, they get the pony.
- Best Western Hotels Include World Hotels (Luxury, Elite, Distinctive, and Crafted). Best Western Hotels & Resorts, VIB, BW Premier, Sadie, BW Signature, Executive Residency, BW Plus, Aiden, BW Premier, GLo, and the Surestay Group (Plus, Studio, and Collection).
- InterContinental hotels include Six Senses, Regent, InterContinental, Kimpton, Indigo, Even, Hualuxe, Crowne Plaza, VOCO, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Avid, Staybridge Suites, Atwell Suites, Candlewood Suites, and Continental Inn & Suites.
- One quick note on Marriott. The organization itself donated $20k to Susan Collins and Mitch McConnell (and those dollars are counted on the "Republican side of their donations), which is basically donating to undercover Democrats. There's no value in either of those "Republicans", as both are RINOs.
Finally, Democrats on the Left, Republicans on the Right!
Extended Stay $5,684 $616
Choice $501,416 $18,991
Wyndham $12,543 $1,381
InterContinental $60,719 $130,657
Hyatt* $366,656 $0
Best Western $16,969 $19,455
Hilton $1,004,970 $275,314
Marriott $501,446 $237,396
Totals $2,470,403 $683,810
Individuals associated with (and in a few cases the organization itself) the hotel chains listed above donated $3,154,213 to political campaigns in 2020.
*Hyatt was owned by the Pritzker Group during the 2020 election, and while news reports that their might be some changing of ownership, as it is for now, I recommend you sleep outside before sleeping in a Hyatt.
** G6 owns the Motel 6 Chain, among others, and they are owned by Blackstone Group, which owns a ton of assets. Individuals, within the parameters stated above, affiliated with the Blackstone Group donated more heavily to Republicans, however, they donated about 10 times more to Joe Biden than to Trump. So, stay at your own risk in any hotels affiliated with the G6 chain.
